James “Jimmy” Gallagher [1](Jr[2]) was an American art student at Central Saint Martins, London. He was found murdered on the platform of Baker Street tube station setting off the events in Whispers Under Ground.

His father is an US senator. One of his forefathers was a Sean Gallagher, the brother of Patrick Gallagher, who emigrated to the United States after he was accused of murder.[1]

James Gallagher was a highly talented, but 'boring' art student according to his peers and teachers.[1] His painting technique was considered excellent and his subject material often included streets and landscapes in the style of early 20th century painters. After meeting the Quiet People the subject material of his art changed to painting underground passages and the Quiet People themselves. He was also learning pottery from Stephen at the time of his death.[1]
