Hugh Oswald Tower

Hugh Oswald's tower in Herefordshire.

Hugh Oswald is a hedge wizard, formerly employed by the Folly. He retired from The Folly sometime after World War II due to post-traumatic-stress disorder. Since his retirement he has raised a family and is an extremely successful apiarist.

Early Life[]

Not much is known about Hugh Oswald's early life. He is approximately 10-20 years younger than Thomas Nightingale and may have attended Casterbrook.

Military Service[]

He fought at Antwerp and Ettersberg during World War II. Based on the dates, Hugh was approximately 19-24 years old at the end of the war in 1945. This is consistent with Peter's remarks upon seeing the photo of Oswald in his military pay book, stating he was younger than Peter himself.[1]

Later Life[]

After the war he retired to the countryside and became a beekeeper. He lives near Wylde in Herefordshire. He gave his staffs to Peter Grant.[1]

He has one son[2], and is the grandfather of Mellissa Oswald.[1]

Hugh Oswald's library[]

Hugh Oswald has a large private library in his home. Some of the books are:

  • A copy of the book Folklore of Herefordshire by Ella Mary Leather, probably stolen from Gloucester City Library.[1]
  • His copy of The History of Ludlow, by Thomas Wright Esq., is stolen from the Bodleian Library.[1]
  • A Survey of Significant Locations in England and Wales by Henry Boatwright.[1]
  • A copy of Barbey d’Aurevilly’s Histoire Insolite et Secrète des Ponts de Paris in very poor condition.[1]
  • Barnaby Atkins' Incident books, from his time as County Practitioner.[1]
  • Books by Virgil, Tacitus and Pliny.
  • Books on local history, beekeeping and modern fiction.[1]
